When it's the right tool
Bypassing email size limits
Sending large files that exceed email attachment limits is the most common use. Most email clients cap attachments at 20–25 MB. With peer-to-peer sharing there's no server imposing a limit — the file goes straight from one browser to the other, so the practical limit is only your available RAM.
Transferring between your own devices
Transferring files between your own devices without involving cloud storage is another frequent reason. On the same Wi-Fi, a direct transfer is often faster than uploading to a cloud drive and downloading again on the other device. Open the tool on both, share the code, and the file arrives.
One-time private transfers
Quick one-time transfers where you don't want to create a shared folder or leave anything stored permanently. The connection exists only for the session — once both tabs close, there is no trace of the transfer anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Files transfer directly between browsers using WebRTC peer-to-peer technology. The signaling server only exchanges a tiny handshake message (~2 KB) so both browsers can find each other — your actual files never touch any server.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no hard limit. Files transfer directly between devices so the only practical limit is your available RAM for very large files. Files of several gigabytes work fine on modern hardware.
Do both people need to be online at the same time?
Yes. Because files go directly from one browser to the other (peer-to-peer), both the sender and receiver must have the tool open simultaneously. The room code expires after 30 minutes.
What happens if the connection fails mid-transfer?
The transfer will be interrupted. You will need to start a new session and resend the files. This can happen if one side goes offline, the browser tab is closed, or a very restrictive firewall blocks peer connections.
Can it transfer multiple files at once?
Yes. Select or drop as many files as you like on the Send side. They are sent one after the other over the same connection, and the receiver can download each file individually.
How fast is the transfer?
Speed depends on your network. On the same local Wi-Fi, transfers can be very fast since data travels directly between devices without going through a server. Over the internet, the limiting factor is the upload speed of the sender's connection.
Can I use it on a mobile phone?
Yes. Both the send and receive sides work on mobile browsers. Tap the file selector on the send side to pick files from your phone storage. The receiver gets a standard browser download prompt when each file is ready.
What happens if the tab is closed mid-transfer?
The connection drops and the transfer stops. Both sides need to stay on the page for the full duration. If a transfer is interrupted, you will need to start a new session and resend from the beginning.
